The Bezabor Log

"The Bezabor Log" is my online diary since retiring in September 2005. My blogging name,'Bezabor', is an archaic term used mostly by canallers in the 1800's and early 1900's. It refers to a rascally, stubborn old mule. In the Log, I refer to my wife as 'Labashi', a name she made up as a little girl. She had decided if ever she had a puppy, she'd call it 'McCulla' or 'Labashi'. I'm not sure how to spell the former so Labashi it is. Emails welcome at bezabor(at)gmail.com.

Slow, slow recovery

(posted from home)
(This post covers 12 – 20 March, 2012)

----------------------------

Tuesday, 20 March -

After my morning web patrol I worked at my desk for a bit, then drove a tax document over to my tax-prep lady. That gave me an excuse to go on in to the new Starbucks on the north side of York.
When I left the house the sky looked like it might rain but as it improved I decided I'd go over to Rudy Park again. My walk again lasted only for about 45 minutes and I was drenched in sweat by the time I stopped.
On the way home I stopped at the hardware store for some sap-remover so I can try to get Labashi's car cleaned up. For some reason one of our pines decided to plop a dozen or so blobs of sap on her car's front fender and windshield.
I also hit the Giant for a bit of grocery shopping.
By the time I got home I was again exhausted. Lately I've only needed a half-hour or so to recover but today I slept heavily and that's going to affect my sleep pattern.
I have finished my course of antibiotics but I understand it stays with me for another five days.
That evening we watched a rerun of 'Sin City', the Robert Rodrigues 'graphic novel'.

Monday, 19 March -

I spent much of the morning working in my home office, trying to get through the paperwork on my desk. I have the bad habit of stacking things up there to look at later but then taking far, far to long to get back to it. That, of course, leads to a bigger and bigger pile.
Fortunately, today's reading and sorting was actually kind pleasant and unrushed.
Around lunch time Labashi and I drove over to Deb's Pizza for lunch, then on to Rudy Park for a walk. We've not walked together for a very long time and Rudy's a great place to get back into it. The park is small enough that you're never more than 15 minutes from the car yet there are enough trails and variety for a nice, long walk if you want it. There are a few people around and there's always something going on in the dog enclosures.
I don't think our walk last even 45 minutes today. It seemed to go well but afterwards I faded fast. When we got home I took a much-needed nap. Perhaps I'm not making as much progress as I thought.
That evening we watched two episodes of 'Intelligence'. Yep, this one's a keeper.

Sunday, 18 March -

Today's goal was to get the counter cleaned up. A section of our kitchen countertop accumulates all kinds of things--- notes, mail, to-do lists, paperwork to be reviewed before filing, etc.
I have a hard time keeping it clear and that drives Labashi a little nuts. Today, for instance, it had license-plate stickers and registration cards for the motorcycles, the ATV and the new trailer. Signing the cards and putting the stickers on isn't a problem but then it turned out I was missing the ATV registration sticker. For these, the state doesn't put the sticker in a special envelope with a sticker window; it merely stamps the envelope to tell us there's a sticker inside. Well, not this one. My problem, though, was the envelope had been opened by Labashi while I was in Florida and it was on the mail pile. In any case, I looked up the DCNR ATV registration web site and learned I'd need to fill out a paper form and send it in with a check for $5. But the link to the paper form didn't work. So I had to write an email to the DCNR to ask how to get the form. I guess I'm justifying why I spent so much time doing simple things.
That afternoon we drove over to Mom and Dad's apartment and had supper there. Dad made a fantastic sauce for the 'bouchee a la reign' (similar to chicken a la king). I could eat that at least once a week and never tire of it.
That evening we watched 'Intelligence', a Canadian TV show set in Vancouver. The pilot was very good so I think we've got a winner! The only problem we're having with it is the sound seems muddled coming from Netflix. Subtitles, please!

Saturday, 17 March -

It may be my imagination but I think the prescriptions are beginning to make a difference. I spent the morning on the web and then cleared a backlog of mail that accumulated while I was in Florida.
That evening we watched 'The True Story of Hannibal', a History Channel production we ordered from Netflix.

Friday, 16 March -

This morning I went to my doctor about this extended recovery period. Today is the 23rd day since I first became sick and I'm not a whole lot better.
The diagnosis this time: some type of infection, perhaps bronchitis or a sinus infection. I was prescribed an antibiotic and a nasal spray.
I worked with Labashi on some financial stuff we need to get squared away but by mid-afternoon I was once again exhausted and took a nap.
That evening we watched the last disk of 'Boardwalk Empire', season one. We had liked the first part of the season but it seemed to stall as the season went on.

---------------------------------

Thursday, 15 March -

I again wanted to get out of the house today so we drove down to Five Guys in York for lunch. That turned out to be a mistake. I seemed to get worse after the meal and wanted only to go home for a nap. The nap helped a lot and I seemed to come out of it by evening.
In mid-afternoon I called the Blue Cross nurse and talked to her about my not seeming to come out of this sickness problem. She confirmed it's time to go see another doctor.
We watched the second half of season one of 'Lilyhammer'. It was good enough (barely) to keep us watching but only because of the foreign setting and we didn't have anything better handy.

--------------------------------

Wednesday, 14 March -

I felt somewhat better by mid-morning and decided I had to get out of the house a bit. I sat in the sun for 20 minutes or so and then convinced Labashi to join me on a run to the new Starbucks on US30 at I-83. We spent the time reviewing bids for the work we're planning to have done on the house this summer. We had five contractors come in to bid and so far only three have actually submitted bids.
That evening we watched “51 Birch Street”, a touching documentary about the behind-the-scenes story of a long and unhappy marriage, filmed by the son. We also started the Netflix series 'Lilyhammer', an odd gangster story set in Lillehammer, Norway. We love the scenery but the writing is so predictable it's ridiculous. Yay, Americans. Saviors of the world. Even if they're criminals.

Tuesday, 13 March -

Today's much the same as yesterday. I don't understand why I'm not improving.

--------------------------------

Monday, 12 March -

I'm still not doing well. I'm not terribly sick or anything but continue to be more or less unable to do anything useful. I'm a bit nauseous in the morning but that passes by mid-morning. I'm able to do my regular web patrol but by mid-afternoon I'm exhausted and have to take a nap. The nap only lasts an hour, perhaps less, and then I'm good through the evening and things seem fairly normal. Surprisingly, I'm sleepy at bedtime and fall asleep easily.
