The Bezabor Log

"The Bezabor Log" is my online diary since retiring in September 2005. My blogging name,'Bezabor', is an archaic term used mostly by canallers in the 1800's and early 1900's. It refers to a rascally, stubborn old mule. In the Log, I refer to my wife as 'Labashi', a name she made up as a little girl. She had decided if ever she had a puppy, she'd call it 'McCulla' or 'Labashi'. I'm not sure how to spell the former so Labashi it is. Emails welcome at bezabor(at)gmail.com.

Back to the grind ; Ladder fall ; Tito's Tacos ; Thanksgiving

Thursday, 25 November-

Happy Thanksgiving!
Today Labashi and I drove to her parent's apartment in Mechanisburg for a Thanksgiving meal. I had some catching up to do on maintenance of Dad's PC and spent much of the afternoon reloading Norton Security Suite (which had mysteriously quit working). I also fixed a few little complaints Dad had about how Word 2007 worked differently than Word 2003. I also worked with Windows Photo Gallery a bit to learn about tagging photos in order to organize them.
Labashi made a great meal for us, this one featuring a Thanksgiving meatloaf.
Back home that evening we watched two episodes of 'Dexter, Season Two'.

Wednesday, 24 November-

This morning I ran the Redbox movie 'Extra Man' back to the Giant on the GS. I really need to order an electrical connector cable for the GS so I can plug in my Gerbing jacket, though. Once the temps drop below 55 or so, it's time for heat!
I spent much of the afternoon on Vimeo and YouTube, watching videos made with so-called 'HDSLR' cameras, i.e., digital single-lens-reflex cameras which can shoot high definition videos.
I also did some Black Friday shopping on the Interweb but didn't see any deals I couldn't pass up.

Tuesday, 23 November-

This morning we had mid-Forties temperatures and sun so I rode the Concours into town. I needed a 12-pack of Doubleshot Lights from Starbucks (“needed” may be stretch) and then went looking for a laser-based digital measuring device at Lowe's and Home Depot. I found several options but will need to do more research on the web.
Back home I spent the rest of the day looking for music to add to the iPod. I found some interesting music on Vimeo.com. The videos there often have music and many show the music used, either in credits at the end of the piece or in a separate description. Once I find something I like it's off to YouTube or iTunes. And of course once I find something I like, I continue trying other music by the same artist. Today my major finds were the HD video 'Galapagos 2010' and then the music 'Intro', 'Crystalised', 'Stars', and 'Infinity' by The Xx, 'First Day of Spring' by Noah and The Whale, 'The Sun' by Villeneuve, and 'Deltitnu' and 'Blue Smoke' by Aydio.
That evening we watched 'The Extra Man' with Kevin Kline. What a strange, ultimately unsatisfying movie. If I think of it as a character study, well, okay. But the story seemed to wander all over the place and I sometimes wondered why.

Monday, 22 November-

I'm still having minor problems with my leg, hip, and back from the ladder incident a few days ago. The abrasion is now turning an ugly purple-green. It's about eight inches wide and 15 inches long. I guess the color change is good in that it indicates healing is starting but it's a bit scary-looking. The muscle stiffness is the worst part now. It takes a while for me to get my work-day going. I have to start slowly and groan a few times as I lean down for something or twist as I work but by late morning I'm feeling much more limber. After that I only have pain when I make a sudden movement. But I'm not complaining. Much.
Today our task was to caulk around the new brickmold covers. Rain is predicted for tomorrow and later this week so we needed to get the covers sealed up to prevent water from getting behind the siding. And today was a nice, 60-degree day so it was very pleasant to work outside. There aren't any more of those days in the forecast.
We found a tube of caulk would do two windows. After lunch Labashi had to run out to Lowe's for more caulk as I finished up a window using what little we had left in both our caulking guns.
We wrapped up the task by 1500 and worked another hour putting away tools, bagging trash, and breaking down storm doors and storm windows to separate metals for our metal-salvage piles.
We left for home at 1600, had supper at the Dillsburg Wendy's and spent the evening vedging.

Sunday, 21 November-

Another Chambersburg day. Today I thought I'd get the cladding done on the regular windows but then ran into a non-standard window frame-- one from a different manufacturer. The pre-formed covers didn't fit. So I spent a few hours making them fit by making the frame more like the others. I added wood strips in some places and planed others to allow the covers to fit correctly. In the end, it came out fine but it seemed to take an awfully long time to hand-fit everything.
Labashi is working in the kitchen of house #1 today. She painted the backsplash laminate with a pigmented shellac and that seemed to work well. She also started mounting the cabinet doors she had worked so hard to reconstruct and paint.
We had supper in the van. Labashi wanted to finish up some fill work for her painting project tomorrow so worked an hour or so after supper, then we drove over to The Igloo for an ice cream.
I spent the rest of the evening on the web, thanks to my new wi-fi amplifier.

Saturday, 20 November-

Still in Cburg. Labashi's working in house #1 today, finishing up the bathroom painting and cleanup. I had a very slow start today. I didn't sleep well last night and woke very stiff and sore. I wasn't sure I'd be able to work today at all. Labashi went on into the house and I took two Excedrin and let them kick in before very slowly and laboriously getting dressed.
By the time I was ready to work the day had warmed up considerably so I went back to work putting aluminum covers on the exterior window sills and trim.
That afternoon Maypo called from Lowe's and said he'd check whether they have the replacement windows we're going to need if I could give him the measurements. He ended up buying all but two of the 11 windows.
By 1600 I was physically exhausted. I had been very close to going home to recover for a few days but I'm glad I stayed. As the day went on I loosened up and taking a few Excedrin helped with the aches and pains. And I only finished two windows today.
That evening Maypo joined us for supper. We had our first meal at Tito's Tacos on the Square. We tried horlata and loved it. It reminds me of chai. Maypo and I also finished off our meals with flan. This one was extra-special; it was topped with whipped cream, a bit of chocolate sauce, and a cherry !!

Back to the grind.....
We drove back to Chambersburg this morning, stopping at Pague and Fagan Hardware in Shippensburg, hoping to find a match to a cabinet pull we lost. No luck there, however.
Labashi sanded and spray-painted the registers for the ductwork in the first rehab house this afternoon while I continued working on the window sill and brickmold cladding.
Late in the day I had an 'oops' when I fell from my ladder. I had put the ladder sideways on gently sloping ground and thought it stable enough even though it wasn't quite vertical. I had just finished putting in a nail and was moving a step lower for the next nail when the ladder fell sideways and out from under me. I landed on top of it, hitting my right hip and upper leg on the ground and whacking my right brow on the now-horizontal ladder's side. I took a minute to slowly roll over and get to my feet, then went into the house where I found I had several abrasions on my upper leg and hip area. I pulled some first-aid supplies from the van and washed up then applied some betadine and gauze and wrapped it with a bandage (with Labashi's help). I went back to work but in the remaining hour or so of daylight I was stiffening up quickly. I had taken some ibuprofen right after the fall and that had taken the edge off.
We went to dinner with local friends at the VFW. I've been surprised to find very good and reasonably priced meals there and tonight was no exception. We had a good time with our friends and sat around talking long after the meal was over. I had stiffened up quite a bit from the fall and was miserable any time I had to get up or get in or out of the car but just sitting at the table I was fine.
